Here Be Dragons

Fence Lizard on fencepost

It's May, the sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, and Spring has sprung. The local dragons are out, defending their territories. One finds these lizards everywhere, but they particularly like fences, with their heavy line posts. Down by the mailboxes each post has its resident lizard.

Cold-blooded reptiles, they depend on the sun to warm their bodies, but too much can be fatal. To maintain the right balance, they alternate between basking in full sun and cooling off in the shade. Fence posts are particularly favored environments because they have both sunny and shady sides at all hours of the day.
