Across the street behind us is the Parkfield Cafe - the Earthquake Capitol of California. Their motto is Be Here When It Happens.
Here we view the gift shop and a couple of old railroad cars, reminders of the town's glory days when there actually were tracks to be on the wrong side of. Now, Parkfield consists only of the one-room school, the library (open two days a week), the Parkfield Cafe, and the Parkfield Inn.
From about June until the end of the fire season, the population is swelled by the addition of the CDF (California Department of Forestry and Fire) firemen who staff the fire station across from the school. They provide protection against California's wildland fires, and are assisted by the air tankers based at Paso Robles.
